Our class is a pure Year 2 class with Miss Bannister as Class Teacher and Mrs Ford as Teaching Assistant.

This class page is designed to give a brief overview of what we are covering in class. We share more detailed information about what we get up to using the Class Dojo app. Parents can request login details via their child's class teacher.

Our Topics 2024-2025:

Autumn Term 1 2024:
'Know Your Place - Bolsover'

This term our topic is 'Know your place- Bolsover'. We will be looking at:

  • The continents and oceans of the world.
  • Maps and their symbols. 
  • Using maps and compass points.
  • Naming the capital cities of the four countries. 
  • Identifying Bolsover on a map and looking at the human and physical features. 
  • Creating a fact-file using our information.
  • Experimenting with lines to create different effects.
  • Beginning to use Microsoft Word.

Maths

In maths, we are learning Place Value. This includes: 

  • Recognising tens and ones.
  • Partitioning numbers to 100. 
  • Putting numbers on a number line.
  • Order objects and numbers. 
  • Count in 2s, 5s and 10s. 
  • Count in 3s.

Science 

In Science we are learning about Uses of Everyday Materials. Here is the Knowledge Organiser below. 

Other Subjects

PE

We are learning fundamental movement skills. During all PE lessons, the children will be working on their personal and social skills. 

The unit gives us a chance to develop footwork skills, one-legged balances and seated balances. 

 

PSHE

During PSHE lessons, the children will be learning how to explore different emotions and how to develop ways to deal with these to different situations. 

We hope that they will be able to apply these on the playground. 

 

RE

This half term, we will be learning who is a Christian and what they believe. This links to some of our British Values especially tolerance. 

 

French

We are learning how to meet and greet each other in french and beginning to practise simple conversations with others. 

 

Music

In music, we are learning how to find the beat to different music, listening to a range of genres and learning and performing songs with actions. The children also use xylophones and play them to music. 

 

Autumn Term 2 2024:
'Improve Our World & Guy Fawkes'

This term our topic is 'Improve Our World!'

We will be learning about:

  • Waste and how we can improve and help the environment.
  • Litter and air pollution.
  • Different sewing skills and creating an earth using these.
  • Evaluating our learning both verbally and written.
  • Gymnastics.
  • Re-telling a story using adverbial phrases.

As well as learning about this topic, we will also learn about Guy Fawkes and his plot to destroy the houses of parliament!  

 

Maths

In maths, we are learning Place Value. This includes: 

  • Adding ten more and ten less. 
  • Add and subtract tens.
  • Adding and subtracting two 2-digit numbers (not exchanging).
  • Adding and subtracting two 2-digit numbers (exchanging using the column method).
  • Missing number problems.

Computing

In Computing, we are learning how to use Scratch Junior where the children will be learning about coding.

Other Subjects

PE

We are learning gymnastics with Qualitas. We will be working on different movements throughout a unit. 

 

PSHE

During PSHE lessons, the children will be learning how to be responsible and how to develop and use the strategies taught in different situations. 

We hope that they will be able to apply these on the playground. 

 

RE

This half term, we will be learning How and Why we Celebrate Special Times. This links to some of our British Values especially tolerance. 

 

French

We are learning numbers 1-20. 

 

Music

In music, we are learning how to find the beat to different music, listening to a range of genres and learning and performing songs with actions. The children will be rehearsing songs for their Christmas Play and performing these in front of an audience. 

Spring Term 1 2025:
'Who makes the rules? - Monarchy'

Our topic this term is 'Who makes the rules?'

We will be learning about:

  • Queen Elizabeth I.
  • Queen Victoria.
  • Comparing both the queens and looking at their similarities and differences.
  • Creating characters on Scratch Jr and developing conversations.
  • Creating artwork in the style of George Seurat.

'Heroes and Villains - Mary Seacole'

This term, our topic is Heroes and Villains: Mary Seacole.

We will be learning:

  • All about Mary Seacole and recapping Florence Nightingale.
  • Creating a non-chronological report on Mary Seacole using Purple Mash.
  • Writing a diary as though we are Mary Seacole.
  • How to perform a dance in PE.
  • Everyday materials and their uses in Science.

Summer Term 1 2025:
'Fairy Tales'

This term our topic is ' Once upon a time - Fairy Tales.'

We will be looking at:

  • Ordering fairy tales.
  • Re-tell some well-known fairy tales.
  • Plan and write a story with an alternate ending. 
  • Mix colours on the colour wheel. 
  • Experiment with printing.
  • Listen to music and clap in time with the beats.

Summer Term 2 Topic 2025:
'Explorers: Christopher Columbus'

This term our topic is 'Explorers: Christopher Columbus.'

We will be looking at:

  • Who Christopher Columbus is and what he did.
  • Create a fact-file about him using the correct terminology.
  • Comparing old and new ships. 
  • The different routes Christopher Columbus took and why he did this. 
  • Understanding tones and tints and using these skills to paint backgrounds relating to Christopher Columbus.

We will also be looking at staying safe on the internet and discussing why this is important.
